If you look through all the pages of research I've done I've yet to find a 78 Z/28 automatic with the CHS code. CHS from my research is 100% a manual transmission code for the 78Z. I set out on this mission years ago to see for myself that the GM reference info that people have used for this site, and others, seems faulty in this regard.

Every California 1978 Z28 came with an automatic trans as the 4 speed was not available in California. That being said I don't think there is a record anywhere of how many 1978 Z28's were built for sale in California. I think the Van Nuys assembly plant even made 1978 Z28's with a 4 speed; they just couldn't be sold in California.

My thanks the TheFastForrester for doing all of his research to clarify the CHS suffix code for 1978 Z28 with a BW SuperT10.
My 1978 Z28 numbers matching, one owner, with full documention, 4sp BW has the CHS suffix. The engine serial number is gang stamped, but the CHS code does not appear to be. The S is a little higher than the CH.
As was stated before in this forum, Chevrolet's record keeping could be a little suspect in some areas. Again, thanks to TheFastForrester.

You are most welcome, I'm glad the info has helped fellow 1978 Z28 M/T owners!
