Imagine if you can a cold winter day with snow on the ground and nothing on TV but golf and racing. Thats how it was back in the day we'd get the fire stoked and get ready for the winter racing International Race Of Champions that was on, identically prepared cars driven by drivers from all forms of racing included Indy car, Nascar and Road Racing guys competing in 2nd gen Camaros from 1975 to 1980. Then after a couple years off they came back with the 3rd gens and GM built an IROC optioned car. The first couple years of 2nd gen IROC series on TV they raced full steel bodied cars modified with massive fender flares, interior roll cages, and I think around 450 hp sbc engines. The steel body cars look the best if you ask me, the later years used fiberglass bodies which were pretty sharp but just not as real as what you could go buy at the dealership. They were probably tube frames chassis Im not sure but they would run 180mph I think back then. If Im recalling things right its was this time in racing history when they really discovered air flow and used the draft. I collected a bunch of pictures to share I think these cars back then were what auto cross cars are like today. It was awesome to see the races as a kid, would like to see replays...here are some 2 gen IROC camaros my fave is the black #7 Al Unser 79 Z28

Had to Google, was there really a guy named Jacky Ickx? Bet he had fun in grade school. But there really was, sort of:

Jacques Bernard "Jacky" Ickx is a Belgian former racing driver who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times and achieved eight wins and 25 podium finishes in Formula One. Shown in the #7 black Camaro.

I forgot I have a bunch of those old IROC races on tape someplace. Maybe this winter I will try to host them up someplace.
