Any of those rounds will kill a deer. What you need to do is see which one shoots the tightest group and go with it. My Dad had a lever action .44 mag that he killed many deer with in Mississippi. Like you, he never had a shot more than 100 yards.

    Good read, in the link.

44 mag. works at a hundred yds, well placed shot, yada, yada.
Not everyone needs a bean field gun.

    Check Buffalo Bore, amongst others.

This will be getting a 44mag barrel for close work, when I don't want to "Carry" a rifle.

Oh yeah. A friend of mine took 2 bucks last year. Undressed they weighed 175lbs and 185lbs.
The colder the climate the bigger the animal needs to be to survive.

A 44 will take a deer no problem, In the woods all I hunt with is a 30-30 and sometimes I take my model 7 7mm-08. You're lucky to get a 75yd shot in most places in the woods. I don't know how it is in other places but to get the big ones we have to hunt some ruff stuff. I got these deer this year and shot them both under 50 yards with a 30-30. Both didn't run no more than 60 yards. If your hunting fields or places to get shots past 100 yards, a bigger caliber is better. I have a 300 win mag and 308 for that. But you need to find what your gun likes and shoots the best groups. A well placed shot is all you need to have a clean kill.

Exactly a large buck in my area dresses out above those weights. And the difference is just as big if not bigger between me and north Dakota where Gary is!

Yea the deer down here in the South isn't near as big as the deer where you guys are from. This year wasn't much of a year hardly any mash in the woods. But there is still some big bodied deer down here, the biggest I have ever seen took was the 13 point my papaw killed in the late 90s. It was in the 160-170in range and weighed almost 300lbs. That thing was a bruiser I haven't seen one shot like that around here since. I believe my buddy uses the 240gr XTP with good results. And he has killed numerous deer with the old 44.

I'm getting more 240gr. XTP or JHP than anything else. Before this I never thought of a hollow point as a hunting round.

of all the deer I've gun killed none have ever been past 75 yards, many within 50 (woods hunter)

kinda makes my .308 sighted in at 100 overkill

that .44 would work fine around here in the woods
