4spd metal tag #

Checking out my trans on a #s matching z28 4spd car and i see this tag? Anyone know what these numbers mean? Its a metal tag with #s 3981709WT can't download a poc of it for some reason.

That is the GM part number for that tranny. I have a list of the part numbers used in 1970, but that number isn't a 1970 number. The 1970 numbers are listed in the 1970 Assembly Manual so you can likely find the number list for your car in the Assembly Manual for your year.

Everything I found on 3981709 WT points toward a '71 Pontiac M20 for A or F body.

If it is a'71 M20 for Pontiac, it is also a '71 M20 for Chevy. They used the same trannys.

Excellent, yes started to do some digging. Found same thing. Guess it's a M20. Thanks for your help.

1970 Camaro Muncie tag #s:
3952659-RPO M20 w/RPO L34, L48, & Z28

Not disagreeing...but all of my searches only referenced Pontiac as the application.

Serial number / stamping code pic would clear this up right away, also which side of the muncie is the ( of the tail stock ) speedo opening on ?

If you could post up a pic of the production/vin stamp on your trans... it will help us with the decode for sure
