Maybe BIT gets a sellers fee so they were trying to circumvent paying it?

BAT gets 5% of every sale, they immediately take it from your credit card as soon as the auction ends

they take it from the buyer though, not the seller. And there is a Cap

    How Our Fees Work

    • Sellers pay a $99 listing fee, with the option to add our Plus photo service for an additional $250. There are no other seller fees on BaT.
    • Buyers pay a 5% fee on top of the final sale price to BaT, with a minimum of $250, and capped at $5,000.

The buyer was the highest bidder according to the seller. Seller said it sold for more than the highest bid after negotiations.
Like others here, I think the buyer was a broker who represented someone that had very little knowledge of an early 2nd gen. Perhaps the three highest bidders were brokers bidding against each other with other people's money, lol.

I couldn't believe the car broke $40K considering all the issues on a supposedly 11K mile car. I bet the members here with legit cars are feeling pretty good about $80K+ for a questionable car. The whole auction was a joke, from the cry babies calling out the "naysayers" for questioning the car to the severe lack of knowledge from commenters. I know the seller has to be happy about the big pay day on that pig with lipstick. I'm guessing the buyer has enough money to care less. If both are happy, so be it.

Might want to keep a look out for the VIN 124870N570762

I bet it comes back for sale in the not-to-distant future.

These cars are typically traded around a bit.

I think if it shows up again, it didnt actually sell like the seller said it did. JMO. I love the second gens, i love my car, but my god this car brought what seems to something right below a holy grail car. I have sort of breezed through this thread, and the BAT stuff, but i dont see how that car is 80K special.

It wasn’t worth $80k but a sucker is born everyday.
