exactly. I owned one automatic 2nd gen. Frankly it was boring to drive and after a few years, swapped to a stick. Every other Muscle car since then is a manual. My daily drivers are automatics for convenience. Even my 2001 Camaro SS Was a stick and I commuted in That. My wife thought I was crazy. I love the new corvettes but with no manual trans, I’d never buy one. Now, that’s just me- I love shifting gears in a performance car. Others (obviously) have different opinions. As to autos in a 70 z28, they tend to sell for a little less ($5k) and take longer to sell but they all get bought.
From this to this all for the pleasure of rowing the gears - Don't get me wrong the auto 70Z with 4.10 gears was nice to drive in the stop and go traffic on HWY 90 during events like Cruisin the Coast. There's just the fun factor of having the 4 speed available to bring the car alive vs the the kick-down feature of the auto. ps plus the stigma of the fender badges being in the wrong location
I agree with you but I remember when I ordered it I was asked if I want the RS or SS, I wanted the full bumper and small spoiler in the back. It was put down as a SS with the full Z28 package. Have the original owner's manual and my loan book from the First National Bank! Still looking for the order sheet.
the sales guy was probably referencing the rs front end Option or std front end that came on SS, Z28, etc. the SS smallblock engine was a 300hp L48. The Z28 engine was a special hi performance derivative of the LT-1 used in the corvette. If it has the 300hp and SS badging it’s an SS. If it has the Z28 badging and Z28 engine it’s a Z28. But as said above, can’t be both.
