Just got my 77 back from media blasting and it exposed a 1” hole in the roof skin above where the rear view mirror would normally be (front centre). There’s also some kind of pressed nut stuck to the inside of it and a corresponding bolt hole on the inner skin. It all looks factory but can’t work out what was there so before I go blindly digging through my interior parts, does anyone know what it’s for and what it would have been filled with originally?
I would think it would be for some sort of professional radio, possibly two way.To get the nut on the inside of the roof skin, one would have to at least partially take a headliner down. Can't see a CB'er or even a ham operator going through all that, since antennas were available that clamped to panel edges, drip rails, or magnetized. In any case, I would think some sort of antenna. Do you have any history on the car Scott?
Not much to look at, will have to get some better pics tonight and maybe hit it with the wire wheel. Only history I have on the car is that it was imported into NZ from Japan, by an American serviceman working in the Naval base in Christchurch. First thought was also antenna but the car already had a pretty big one installed on the rear quarter when I got it, and the holes and the captive nut look like factory work. BTW the lump in the centre of the hole is the end of a 1/4” or 5/16” bolt the blaster put in before painting
Hmmm might have to dig out my old headliner and few of the other parts I removed to check if I still need it or should weld it up
