Here in AZ, it's a real luxury to have in the garage in the summer. My mom is selling her house and she said to take the AC unit if I wanted it from the workshop. This thing is 1 heavy sob and I managed to put it up there myself. I pulled something in my shoulder while I was doing it and it still hurts three weeks later. It is a 1982 JCPenny 11200 btu unit and still blows cold. Keeps the garage around 85 if you start it in the AM and will keep it there past noon when it is 110 out. I'm getting to be a spoiled old guy. Look at her. Just waiting for the wood paneling to be installed.

Cool! Sept here and we are hitting 97 today and 98 tomorrow and I'm no where close to being done working on fuel injection install, might have to leave kitchen door open and blow a/c from house into garage to survive today. Getting too old for this crap. I can do yard work in the heat but for some reason sweltering in the garage is a whole nother world of uncomfortableness.

When you want to get something done, A/C is the best. Not only does it keep you comfortable, it keeps nosy neighbors from wandering in to see what you're doing when you keep the doors closed. What comes after the paneling Dave, orange shag?

I put one of those 11,000btu air conditioners in my garage back in 2004 when I built the garage. It has come in handy in past summers when it was hotter. The past few summers here have been so cold that I haven't turned it on at all, but it still sits there waiting if another hotter summer comes again. I also built an insulated cover that I install over it in winter so the cold can't get in through the air conditioner.

Only problem I have with the AC in the garage is when spray painting or cleaning parts with thinner. The stink stays for a long time. But has been a life saver this summer, really hot and muggy, water pours out of the back of the unit. Cold concrete floor does feel nice! Kind of hate that electric bill though.

Funny thing. I was thinking about leaving the door open to the house on several occasions but did not want to pay the bill for it. Did not want to listen to the Frau about it either.

So is the question should you take that old ass air conditioner that appears to be built into the wall?
Nope. The pic is of the unit installed in my garage. I took it out of hers, brought it to the house, cut a hole in the wall, framed it in and installed it. Practically had to spit on it to get in the hole.

Winter is a non-issue here. A small space heater pointed at your workspace and a moving blanket or two to lay on is enough. Not like ND, that's for sure!

Yup. Cannot use it while cutting, welding, grinding etc. either. Stench will never get out.
