And it'll only get worse with all the "assists" that get put in cars where drivers don't feel like they have to check their blind spot, pay attention, etc. I think these are only making people more complacent on the road.

Not to mention, most people would crap themselves if they knew the things we have to do behind the wheel in a combat zone. We're a lot more distracted than your average driver in hairy situations.

Guess what I'm saying is it's not the distractions, it's the attitude of the driver. And too many people have complacent attitudes. And like I said, it's only going to get worse the more driver "assists" they put in vehicles.

What I can't stand is the people that drive by their GPS and don't have a clue what's around them! I've see people go from the Passing Lane on a 4 Lane Highway to the Exit Ramp all the time on my way to work. This morning I saw a PT Cruiser turn into the side of a Pick-up Truck cuz that was her exit.

It is definately a pack mentality when it comes to speeding on the interstates. I've been on I65 south of Montgomery a few times, and have gotten into a pack of 5 or 6 cars rolling at 90 for miles and miles on end. Even passed troopers going the other way. Flyin'. You could never do that in Illinois. ISP would have you in no time. They have nothing better to do than sit and wait for you, out in the middle of nowhere. And the damn motorcycle cops we have here now, you really gotta watch for them, they hide in some f'd up places. I've seen them do some dangerous stuff just to get a speeder at 10 over the limit. To me catching speeders is nothing but a money grab. Period. 90% of the time, the police presence alone will slow the flow of traffic and get people to slow down. But most of the time you can plainly see by where they sit, they are just killing time on my dime, trying to catch someone. So it turns into a game. Police arm themselves with radar guns and I arm myself with a detector. And I drive ever vigilant of their sneaky ways.

We have a ISP trooper that loves to sit on the overpass at the first Illinois exit on our brand new Mississippi River Bridge. Thinks he pretty sneaky. He has a sign behind him that faces the other lanes of the highway. So he thinks you dont see him, but you can if you know to look ahead around the gently sweeping interstate, as you approach. You can see him plain as day. Just sitting there as traffic passes. But it got so obvious the other day, that people in the other lanes were flashing thier lights and everyone on my side was tapping brake lights for a mile. We all did our mandated 55mph. I beeped and waved at him as I came up to him, so he shot me with the laser from point blank, lol. The detector made so much noise and put on such light show I thought it was going to blow up. I haven't seen him back for a few days.

^You sure showed him....

He doesn't do it to be sneaky, he does it because it's his job. Whether you agree with the laws or not, he's doing his job to the degree that you have to do yours in order to keep it and make a living.

The ISP sits in droves with a single officer on the overpass just coming out of St Louis back to IL maybe 10 miles into the state. Going south one time I literally saw 10 ISP squads with a pull over about 100 feet apart. I was like WTF......then as I pass the overpass I saw a few more ISP squads waiting at the entrance, and the 1 trooper facing Northbound traffic nailing em and calling the next batter up. So I knew on my way back home to be EXTRA careful. Now I don't f*** around at all in Southern IL on I-55.

It's their job, no doubt. It's a cat and mouse game. People just get mad when they get caught because it's just so commonplace to speed.

The prismatic reflection off a headlight or license plate I can believe.
A tire......I can't believe that is physically capable.
I can sorta see it working off a tire.
A friend of mine bought one of those high-power green lasers that aren't exactly legal. It will put a BRIGHT green spot on a thick cloud overhead. Shine it on pretty much anything <100 yards away, and it reflects back enough light to make you squint.

Think about it from a scientific POV- if a tire didn't reflect any light back to your eye, it would look perfectly, completely, 100% black. You can see that it isn't the case, so a focused, mid/high power laser will probably bounce back just fine.

I dunno about that example......maybe I'm off

But you can see a laser through darkness (or daylight) also, so it doesn't mean it's reflecting back, you just see the beam. Besides, we're talking reflectorless EPDM now.

Think about this,
Take a laser pointer and aim it at a mirror. Where does the the light bounce back to ?? Not it's origination point.
I think you have a better chance of hitting the lottery 20x then getting the proper angle to get it back to it's source blindly.

Ace, there are several traps like that along I55 south of Springfield. Or at least places they set up. But the one you are talking about is the exit I use everyday, twice. They love to sit there on the bridge. The speed limit opens up to 70 about 3 miles up the road if you are north bound. So they get a lot of people travelling thru, thinking they are home free (from St.Louis)going to Chicago, 250 miles away (with only 2 small metro areas to skirt). WRONG!!! They love to set up like that on the hoilday weekends, like this one one coming up. And it really is silly, because that highway was engineered for average speeds much higher than what they have posted. Its actually an awesome stretch of interstate between Springfield and I70 (about 90 miles). Lots of looong gentle sweeps, then about 45 miles of straight, flat road (going north)that you can see for miles and miles on, with only a few exits along the way. Places like that (open interstates only) should have a RECOMMENDED speed. Where they wont look at at you at 10-15 over, unless its an obviously dangerous situation.
I could go on and on about the speed limits issue and how penalties are assessed. Its nothing more than a money grab. Easy revenue for the state. Easy money for the insurance industry. If the goal really is safety, then get out there and drive, Mr. Trooper, at a safe speed and set the pace. Not the posted speed limit, but at a pace where everyone is happy. When you start getting to congested ares, slow the pace down. But don't be the azzhat cop that drives at 65mph in the left lane for 50 miles out on the wide open highway. See, you made me go on and on a little already.

A member here is an officer and lives just up the street from me. He just left my house with his laser gun and he could not get a reading all the way to point blank. He said he was all over my truck. Headlights, grill, front tag and windshield and no reading.

Did he get an error code? or did it give him horizontal dashes?

Im not sure actually. From what I understand some guns will give an error code and some wont give any codes it just displays dashes across the lcd. I don't want to disclose who it was but if he see's this thread and wants to chime in then he can tell you what it did. It was an UltraLite gun. He showed me the screen with his hand in front of it and it had dashes and beeped really fast.
