I got a lot of lizards in that section of the yard. I didn't see any fried ones but I had no idea they could cause a failure.

Got the final word on mine. Boy, the compressor is LOUD!
New compressor, about $1400 installed. No guarantee other stuff will fail on a 15 year old unit.

    New 5 ton Trane = about $6K+
Time for a HELOC and help the insurance company with a new roof as well. Time to start the "bloodletting".

Dave, sorry about your experience with your "tech". That was completely out of line. Last time mine failed, the fan was $109 and the Cap was about $12 and I fixed it myself. He was trying to hold you hostage with that bill because you gotta have AC in Phoenix. Douchebag move.

The AC "failure" before that was a pile of carbon in the J-box on my roof where the wires used to be connected. They terminated the heavy gauge aluminum wire with wire nuts in a single gang box with a weatherproof cover. Complete fire hazard. It was probably a "tech" like the one you had.
Had to redo the whole thing.

Where do you get parts Dave? Everything I found via google said they don't sell to the public. I didn't want to wait a week for Amazon.

AC is supposed to fail. That way people keep spending money and helping the economy. Consider it your contribution to your country.

I used a local small business who is also an old friend from high school so, that was the only good thing that came from it. I had his dad and son out at my house too. 3 generations hooked me up. All is cool now which is good since it is 112 today and did not get under 80 last night.

Eventually the compressor seized. I had to have the unit replaced.
