Is it possible to pump up the lifters by cranking with the ignition coil unhooked for a period of time? Say 10-20 seconds?
Yes.

FYI, some self-align rockers employ what's little more than a pair of rather thin steel washers --- positioned on either side of the valve roller --- somewhat larger OD than valve roller --- to capture the valve tip.
Not much to that, IMO.

Perhaps you may be better served by a Quality set of self-align Stamped rockers Not roller-tip. With NO plates!
Elgin's Black Ice series are just that --- and are cryogenically treated.

You should also ensure each valve tip is Not damaged and has no burr or edge

I am taking off on Tuesday for about a month and need to get the car to move so I can park it properly in the garage. I will first try to get it running with the old stamped rockers and will worry about upgraded rockers when I am back. If I cannot get it running I will ask someone to help me push it in place.

OK, I tried cranking and pumping up the collapsed lifter. I put in new pushrods on all lifters on the driver side. The collapsed lifter does follow the cam I can see the pushrod go up and down and even pump a little, it is definetely much lower compared top the other pushrods. But when I stop cranking it seems to bleed down very quickly. Does this mean the lifter went bad? Should it bleed down in a matter of 10 seconds?

The plunger spring may have busted? If you got the plunger un-stuck, the spring should hold the plunger up so that you can feel the spring working if you push on it with one of the pushrods.

I'd say you have no option but to tear it down and check the lifters and cam at this point. Did you actually run the engine with those new rocker arms on it?

No, he was really pushed for time and wanted to try and get it moving on a deadline. Looks like it might have to come apart, I think one plunger spring has pooped.

I hate to be the Debby Downer but this sounds like a bad situation. When I bent my valves on the engine stand by turning the starter, I didn't bend a push rod or damage a lifter. Those pushrods and lifter experienced some extreme forces. I don't see how the valves survived. Unless those were some really cheap pushrods and bent before the valves bent. But then that lifter got damaged......it's not looking good to me. I guess just take it one step at a time and piece it back together. I think I would buy all new lifters instead of replacing just one. A couple other ones may be suspect; then hope for the best on the valves/compression.

You need good quality name brand parts and no Chinese knockoffs that were reboxed by someone private. I had someone a while back asking if he could buy my Crane lifter box. WTF.
