I need some help decoding my block. I guess the big blocks are a little different from the small blocks, because all I can figure out is the first digit.

Don’t have much info on these new engines Looking like Gen 6 454 4 Bolt cast Dec 15 1997 . Likely used in 1998. Please correct if mistaken

Yeah, that's about as good as my guess is. Really all I know is that it's a Gen VI based on the fuel pump boss and Vortec heads. I probably should've been a little more specific. I was trying to figure out a date so I don't order the wrong timing gear set, among other things. I'm approaching the $10,000 mark in parts, and I just put it on the stand I built 3 days ago. It's bored .030 and i've already got the conversion kit to swap out the non-adjustable valvetrain. I'm using a flat top piston with a Comp Cams Thumpr CL01-600-8 cam, and Assault Racing PC305 high-rise intake. But it's been Hell trying to find a set of valve springs that will clear the seals, and doesn't require cutting the valve guides

JMO cheaper hypers with thick old-fashioned tractor-style ringpak
perhaps better than KB claimers but that's about it

With these heads you don't have many .030 piston options, at all. Domed are out of the question, and dished are gonna drop the compression way below 9:1. So that pretty much leaves you with about 8 to choose from, unless you want to wait until next year for backordered parts, and time is a luxury that I just don't have anymore. I have to have all of this together, and my transmission rebuilt again before August 30th or I might not ever get the chance to hear it run. The gains or losses from a slim flat top piston selection are so minor in this 5000 lbs 4WD, that it wasn't worth wasting the time to calculate it. Oh....I completely forgot to mention that I sold my "cobbled together" L89 for $4000, 3 weeks ago, and then got paid another $1000 to put it in a 1977 El Camino. Not bad for an amateur
