71 dmv registration frustration continues!

2nd attempt...At dmv today with all paperwork in hand. Finally able to drive this car! LONG discussion between workers away from window, "Sir can't register this car in California!" It's missing the manufacturer's epa sticker under the hood. Since your car is totally restored the odometer is only showing 2k miles. If under 7,500 miles it has to have that epa sticker. You have to contact GM and return with a GM letterhead stating this vehicle meets California epa standards, without that you need to remove this vehicle from California as soon as possible!. So the guy who came out to verify my car and vin checked off epa sticker missing. Since it was a new hood he wrote vichele fully restored. Called him, he called his officer friend at the local CHP office close to me, explained the situation and beautiful condition of car, officer told him for me to just bring the car in to visually see it and he can sign it off. So now have to have the car towed it as I still can't drive it. Need to set up a trailer and dry weather day hopefully next week as rain forecast through rest of this week. So frustrated and really a little nervous at this point.

obviously not the same but I didn't even have that much issue with my car when I got it in my name. I called the DMV, lady asked if I got it smogged, said no because it didn't need it due to the year, "oh...ok" and then got everything transferred in my name.

Hopefully the CHP can get you squared away. I don't even think my car has an EPA sticker, and it was as legal as you could get until I took it apart.

My car has a new Dakota Dash with digital odometer reading. Checking off the box Digital numbers under 7,500 seems an issue. Strange if miles shown over 7,500 miles not an issue with California.

Just buy a replacement, imstall it and have the chp sign off. Tbh you’d probably not get any hassle registerimg it at one of the privatly owned dmv places as they are way smarter then every idiot at dmv.

AAA dmv wouldn't even talk to me as vehicle was sold from an outside California dealer, "dealer" not a private party was the issue, forced dealing with the dmv main offices.

That 7,500 mile thing is due to dealers buying non California emission cars out of state and selling them off the lot. I actually got fired from a Toyota dealer in Temecula for tagging a car in the smog machine for this same thing. I wasn't intentional on my part, they saw the vin and the mileage and flagged it. The dealer had to sell it out of state and took a lose on it.

You are 100% right, and it still sucks you have to deal with it. Unfortunately 95% of the bullshat you guys have to endure with registration and emissions testing can be traced right back to people screwing the system. I was one of those guys as a young man.

I was talking about independent dmv service sites not aaa. For example I bought a class A motorhome from texas. It needed the vin verified and aaa wouldn’t process motorhome transfers. I found a place that did the vin vin verification and completed the title and registration for $60 and handed me my new plates when done. I was in and out in 20min.
