Don't mess with the pinion depth tool. Use the contact pattern to set pinion depth. If you are just changing bearings then you probaly don't have to reset it. You will need to use a new crush spacer and set the bearing preload. You wold be better off getting an installation kit to do this. It will have all of the parts that you need in it.

"I'm trying to write a book, just can't seem to find the time."

Freddie, snail-mail your "hen-scratchings" to me and I will write it up in WORD for you and send it back!

And I've been after UDHarold for several years to do the same thing to no avail.

We gotta keep this tech stuff alive for future"pup" use!

And this is why the ol' man mouths so much except for my POLI POST's that get me in trouble!!

And it's free for free, NO pdq67 wanting ANYTHING here!

I think someone wrote the differential book already. I heard that Amazon had them for sale. I haven't seen one, but someone sent me an email a few years ago asking for some details about the Eaton Posi. I wonder if they used any of my posts to write the book? Maybe I need to read it and see if they owe me any roalty.

So I took my '74 Camaro to the drag strip for the first time last night. Good power - 100+ MPH trap speed - but no traction, a 15.3 second time. It has bad tires and an open differential(3.42 : 1).

A quick search of the internet turned up the Powertrax, Auburn diff, ARB air locker, and Eaton Elocker, among others, but the ARB air locker and the Eaton Elocker marketing targets seemed to be more the off-road trucks than the drag racers. Are the ARB and Eaton systems still okay for the higher speeds in a drag car, or are they better used(locked) in the relatively low speed off road trucks? I'm not all that wild about limited slip differentials in daily driving, I rather prefer an open diff for around town. The limited slip differential in my '78 Z28 always tried to make the back end go sideways in snow and ice(not that I drive either of my Camaros in the winter anymore).

Hey BGH,

How difficult is it to upgrade gears? I plan to do this and install a posi unit, either Eaton or PowerTrax. I have 2.41 gears and I'm thinking of going up to 3.42 or 3.55. Running a 454 with TH-400.

You need to know how to set the pinion depth. bearing preload and backlash. You also must know how to read the contact pattern so that you will know what adjustments need to be made to the pinion depth and backlash. You will need a few special tools for the job. We have coached many people through this on this sight and a few others. Do some reading and when you are ready just start posting questions and pictures and we will help you through it.

Here is something that might be helpfull http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/transmissions-drivetrain/595382-10-bolt-axle-gear.html

Now that it seems the prices have got up on these lock rights. I would look for a second hand unit on Ebay. You can buy a new Posi unit for about the same price.
