Can someone who knows a thing or two look at this ad and determine if this engine would be a bolt in direct fit into a 2nd gen which previously had a 305 or 350 in it? The ad says that it is a 1961 - 1964 283. Casting #s in the pics
Thanks much
Here is the ad

So a guy I know who has been a mechanic longer than I've been alive had this to say about it.

"Don't Waste your money it won't run on cheap Gas at all. Trying to save you money and a Headache."

When people with years of experience say something like that, I question their experience.

If anything…what I would imagine an expert saying…get a 350, cost is about the same and you’ll be much happier.

so some $200 for a piece with little bores that don't like to breathe and a weenie crank to boot. I'm with the gent who said get a 350; no matter how he couched it. A 350 is THE cheapest sbc to buy parts for. And saying "hey, it's a 283" somehow just don't have the swagger as it having a roller cam.
And then some: you'll be light years ahead to source a rebuildable L31 Vortec 350 roller motor from '96 - '02 pickup, SUV, van, med-duty trucks and some ISUZU with "R" as eighth position in 17-character VIN. Yes, some years Escalade and Isuzu have a Vortec L31. Also, Vortec L31 heads are hands-down best performing production sbc heads; ever.

*** the $1200 572 in same area looks much more interesting

Lack of accessory holes would kill the deal for me.

A cheap engine which would require aftermarket or custom accessory mounts, a different intake (to get rid of the oil filler (which probably won’t clear the hood) valve covers with oil filler and PCV valve grommets.

It probably has 200-300k miles on it and needs rebuilding.

You get the idea…

When you consider the visible and potential issues of such an old engine… It’s no longer a cheap engine.

You might be able to use it for a mosquito fogger but I wouldn’t bother with dropping it into a 2nd gen.
