72 ss no AC replaced water pump with exact pump , did not have a shroud put one in , has a clutch fan (not original) fan is not in shroud .
What should I look for to have fan correctly positioned in shroud ?
is original fan and spacer longer than clutch fan?
the shroud is a used oem are they a little different 70-73 ?
all belts align so I feel it is correct water pump ?

About half of the fan is outside the shroud in the factory position.

This is how it sits on my 80.
(SBC V8 with fan clutch and A/C.)

The position should be about the same whether it has A/C or not.
The primary difference is the width of the radiator.

There aren't a lot of different water pumps available. There is a short pump for 60s and earlier cars and a long pump for 70s and later pumps. If the belts fit, I agree that you likely have the correct pump.
Fans and spacers are a different story. There are lots of different ones available. You want something that sits the fan about half way into the shroud for best cooling.

is the original fan and spacer longer than a clutch fan ?

Is it a big block car? Post a pic of the spacer that is in between the pulley and the fan. My guess is this is the difference. There are also two different BBC shrouds. Do you have the correct one?
