Roughly every 2nd trip I make to FL it seems, I get fraud on my credit card. Who knows where- I assume gas station skimmers and/or when I pay at restaurants (and my card disappears with the staff).
Damn, I got hit once in all these years. I did have my identity stolen when that was kind of a new thing, not fun Someone getting my credit card number was a hassle because of the auto payments I had set up but nothing more then that.

OP, file the claim with the CC company and move on.

Might double check your credit card protections too. I think Discover has dialed back their policies on this, maybe others have followed suit? I don't use Discover for anything these days.

I get the text alerts when there is a charge over $100. And they say to never let one's card out of sight, as can happen at a restaurant. Follow them back the where they run the card and watch, I guess. I've had my number stolen 3 times, but, knock on wood, not in a few years now.

After the second time, I stopped using a credit card for everything except internet purchases. The third time, I think it was one of the smaller places I sometimes buy car parts from, maybe one that didn't ask for the CVV number. When my wife ran her internet business, she said her problems with people charging with stolen credit card numbers really cleared up when she started insisting on the CVV number when she took orders. She was suspicious of the security of sites that didn't ask for a CVV number, but I'm not sure how that helps me as a buyer.

We had a bunch of skimmers operating on gas pumps around here a few years ago. They say to look really close at where the credit card goes in, to see if there is a thin plastic insert. I myself haven't found one yet. Going inside to pay does seem like good insurance, though.

One problem with that is you have to go inside before you start the transaction, possibly wait in a long line, pay your deposit, the clerk turns the pump on manually, you fill your car, go back inside to get the difference between the gas purchase and your deposit back and another long line up to do that.

I have had 1 card I use for ALL online purchases and have for the better part of 15 years. Got burnt for a little over $1000 bucks years ago. Online purchase I made with my “debit” card way back I’m certain was the cause although I couldn’t prove it and Wells Fargo was a bunch of a class holes. I ditched WF and have t looked back. I picked up a credit card soon after and like years later I still have it and haven’t been hit again. But I figure better to have a CC co looking for money/payment and I can fight the fraud fight with them and at least still have something in the bank to pay bills with. I don’t use my debit card that stays in the safe with my wife’s card also. These days we have a couple credit cards we use for everyday stuff and dedicated cards for online stuff. Bonus to boot while my money stays in the bank we collect interest, and the credit co gives me “points” which I redeem for about $250 a year in gift cards. Just make the payments on time.

I did get hit from apple of all places a couple years ago. Disregarded an email notification. Then a few weeks later I see another one in my email. So I open it, and it was a “receipt” for a apple purchase tied to my cc. Hmmmmm. Was a Chinese co the purchase was from. I look back in my statements and I was hit 4 times. A couple low buck “tests” then one for 80 and the one I caught was about $140. I called apple and they were asking me all kinds of questions about these “fraudulent” purchases. Finally I got pissed and said “do I sound like I speak f’n maderin??? “ what would I be doing with apps in f’n chinese??”

She kinda laughed and said yes sir I suppose you’re right. And they refunded all 4 of the charges.

I set it up so I get a notification on every purchase. They hit me for a dozen or so door dash purchases before the $1,200 Macy's shopping spree. Chase was very good and getting it all rectified.

I have found discover to be great at handling things like this. They've also been very proactive on fraud. At least twice they've called me and said they caught things before I saw it.
