Just bougt a fixed up 350 with casting nr 3970010 with 4 bolt mains, is this a LM1 or something else, Mikes page says a LM1 with casting number 3970010 os only a 2 bolt main.

Could my block be from a Vette?

Lots of truck blocks were 4 bolt mains.

Look on the right cylinder block in from of the head. There's a machined surface and the engine codes should there if the block has not been milled. Should be 2 set of characters, one it the engine code and the other the VIN derivative. Look something like the following.

    T1024TFD engine code
If the first letter in the suffix is the letter T, its a truck engine. C its a car engine.

    18N300001 VIN derivative
    1 - Chevy, C - Chevy trucks, T - GMC trucks
    8 - model year is 1968
N - assembly plant (various) N is Norwood
    last 6 match the VIN

The code is removed, so i only got the casting no to do my research on, but its a 4 bolt main and a forged crank, so it should be a fairly good start for a high HP Application, Or?

without the suffix code, can you tell what it is by the other #s on the block?

I also have a 3970010 block. It has the 010 and 020 on the back and front, so I also know it is a high tin/high nickel block. The casting date is I 3 9, so I assume it is late 69/early 70 block, and is a 4 blt main block.
But what about the other #s on it. There is a big H38 on the back. what does this represent? Near the oil filter is

    371
    386

    83 N

These are stamped, not cast, so I am assuming that this is part of the VIN.
Mortec.com and NaztyZ28.com can give you the basic numbers, but how can you find out what the other #s mean? I have also looked at a couple of other casting # books, but is is all the same info.
    Can anybody help?
