Difference between cross members

I've managed to find a TH200R4 to swap in place of my TH350 and I'm trying to work out what I need to do with the cross member.

I read somewhere that a cross member for a TH400 would fit (possibly turned around?)

Can anyone explain what the difference is between the TH350 and TH400 cross members?

Do I need to try and find one for a TH400, or can I modify the TH350 one?

I think you can simply use the same TH350 cross member. IIRC, it can even stay in the stock location for TH200 swap (unlike a TH700 swap where you have to move it back about 3").

Flange to mount distance is the same on a 200-4r and a 400.
A 350 cross member won't work unless you have a subframe with holes for a 350 and a 400.
Or you cut off the mount from the bar and reweld it on the back of it which will fit a 400 and a 200-4r.

The 2004R is the same length as the TH350.
The mount for the crossmember is approx. 6 inches further towards the rear on a 2004R. THis is why a spcial crossmember is required

The pan is completely different on a 2004R.
The mounting point is at the very end of the case.
There’s no tail shaft housing as a separate part of the case like a TH350 or TH400 has.

I used the tubular crossmember from Bowtie Overdrive.

Nice strong piece, powder coated and ready to bolt in and go.
That have two styles for our 2nd gens depending upon the year.
(Cross member mount holes in the frame are in a different location on the 70-74 Camaros than the 75-81 models.)

They have gone up in price in the past decade but still not a bad price for a very nicely designed part.

I went the same route as Twisted when I swapped over to a 700-R4, bought a nice tubular powder coated cross member. Fit is perfect, clears dual exhaust, no issues. If you have access to, and can use the proper equipment, then you can save a few bucks.
