For the folks that sell on eBay. My question is why do they collect sales tax on some but not all transaction? Do you get a 1099 tax form from eBay for this stuff? I am new to selling on eBay. I have only sold a few items.

tax collection depends on the state where the buyer is

I get a 1099 but a seller will only receive one if they meet certain criteria:

$20,000 in sales and over 200 transactions in a year

unless you want to get a 1099...yes

I believe 201 transactions will initiate one

best bet is if you're serious then start a business...be a simple sole proprietor that way you can have business expenses to offset the 1099 amount

I have stopped buying on Ebay because of their taxes and fees....and fees...When I buy a "garage sell" equivalent items, I should not have to pay sales tax on it (again). I stick with FB marketplace for now.

I don’t use market place because you get a dozen questions and say I am coming to get it and never hear from them. I like eBay I get very few questions and stuff sells pretty quick no hassle.

That happens a lot with the wife trying to sell stuff. I don’t get it...why say you are coming and never show? It must be a game we don’t know about. It’s better than EBay though, no seller fees, claims, “not as described” complaints etc. One and done.

Exactly my experience these days, whether it's Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or even some members of car forums. Just a waste of time. I never understood the "collector car sales companies" until recently. I've had my lifetime quota of time wasting, wannabe, broke time wasters.
