I just got my hands on a 77z and it does not have an engine or transmission. What I researched, it should have the 3970014 block instead of the 3970010. However, when I look up the 014, it shows the block date of 70-73. Could a 73 block find it's way into a 77 from the factory?
    Thanks
    Spence

It was another casting that Chevrolet could use .It was in use from 1973-9 .So it is possible that its the original block. But with a Z-28 You just never know.

I still have the original shortblock from a 1970 Chevelle 350/300hp I used to own and it is a 3970014 block, code CRE with 4 bolt main and cast crank. Regret selling the original 041 heads off it 30 years ago Lol.

    Thanks,
I like to research it out before I asked so this is what I came up. I couldn't find the 73-79 information. Cali built car and that's kinda what I found out was with those, it wasn't as "popular" so it could have been possible.

I was really fortunate to find a complete 010 block with the correct date and code for my 1970 camaro. I found what I believe to be the right block, right code, but early year. I am not crazy about the numbers I just enjoy researching what should be on it. Especially if I am going to buy something, why not try to find what went in there.

The 3970010 block as well as the 3970014 blocks were used universally for many applications both on 49 state emission cars and also on California emission cars. There were no real differences between these two castings.
