I'm putting a set of Pioneer 6x9 speakers in my 78 and am putting spacers under them so I don't have to cut. My factory holes (without measuring) are for 8x5 speakers.
Back then, there were no 8x5 rear speakers for cars. What did happen is that the holes could overhang the speakers a bit, which might give that appearance, but the normal 6x9s were what went back there.

Ah. So they need to bolt up from inside the trunk?

Yes, the speakers are "bottom surface mounts". The speaker grille goes in from the top, with 4 mounting long screws which go through the holes in the metal panel and the speaker goes up to the bottom of the panel.

Exactly.
Set the grills and studs (or bolts) in place on the rear deck first.
Then raise the speakers into place and spin the nuts onto the bolts.

When I was much younger... I just let all the air out of the rear shocks so I could do a back-bend into the trunk and perform the install.

Now.... I would probably need to call 911 to get out of that self-imposed predicament.

The factory speakers back in the day mounted from the underside of the package shelf. I don't know what year they started with using the hangers but when I was replacing those setups years ago or even installing new speakers when nothing was there before is with an aftermarket speaker they actually had aftermarket hangers that were specially bent wire about the size of coat hanger wire and the two ends slid into punched down notches on the underside of the deck and then on the other side was a L shaped lip that the hanger then slid into.

Just for a little help depending on how you want to go is most aftermarket speakers have a tweeter that protrudes above the perimeter frames top edge and what I did on my 68 Chevy II Nova was make up a spacer to where I did not cut any metal on the deck and had the speaker properly sealed around it's edge.

I also opted for the perforated rear shelf cover and could have gone with grills with mounting studs hanging down but I wanted a more stealth look from inside the car.

And here is a factory setup with the original cardboard protectors lined with some kind of sound deadener.
