Not only is it not mentioned in the news, it’s not mentioned in schools either. The kids have no idea. Few years ago I asked my child if any teachers talked about it, he said not a word. What a shame.
My kids learned about it in school. Did your kids school not?

There was a story about in my local paper. it was mentioned on my local news today. And a story on the national news tonight. Seems jlike it was remembered to me.

I don't see anybody complaining about not remembering Gettysburg. And 20 times more people died there.

My first year in the Navy, 1983, I caught a hop on one of our C-130's to Hawaii, that is one of the most solemn places I have ever stood, looking down at the Arizona and knowing of all the men still on her. But what is also is amazing in 98 I was stationed at Atsugi Japan, the Japanese are some awesome people and one of our most trusted allies today!

It seems like todays America is too busy eliminating things that has happened in history instead of today’s children trying to learn from any wrong that has happened in history and trying to change names of places that they don’t like. Sometimes I’m glad I’m old and have lived a less confusing life.

I agree this a very sad erosion and disregard for our country’s history. I remember it every year. I’ve always enjoyed history but I’m sure it has more to do with my father being career Navy, I was Navy and my youngest son is Navy now. As already quoted in this thread “those who forget history are doomed to repeat it”. Even more disturbing is our country’s citizens have the attention span and memory that lasts only until the next tweet or FB post.

I collect old stuff and a 7.7 arisaka rifle and bayonet is one of the things in my collection. I bought it off a older guy who's dad brought it hoke from the war.
collecting things keeps history alive in your hands. jim
