Yes, ground it under the dash. (That will eliminate any problem with the wire from the dash to the trunk if the gauge goes to empty.)
There is a small amount of current through that circuit so the light will glow.
You are adding the resistance of the bulb but that shouldn't be much.

I would try to ground it directly, without the test light/probe.
You were correct, i used a wire and grounded from the tan wire in the trunk and the needle went to empty. I take it now i have to see if it's a wire, or the sender is bad at the tank. Thanks for the help. Test light is not good for grounding in this situation.

That's a good sign the gauge is working correctly and the wire from the gauge to the trunk is fine.
Look for the ground wire (should be black) near the fuel tank.
If it's just a bad ground... You may not have to drop the fuel tank.

Ground has been checked and seems good at the car end. I ordered a new wiring harness for the sender and a new fuel sender. I am going to have to drop the tank, so might as well replace it. It is what it is at this point. I would rather drop the tank, then have to go into the dash again.

Wire the sending unit and test it before you install it.
Make sure the float portion of it moves free and easy.

Way better to find out if there's a defect before you install it and mount the tank again.

Ended up pulling the tank, and decided to buy a new tank and sending unit. Installed it all last night. 18 gallon tank, so today i went and got 9 gallons, and gauge reads half tank. All is good. Thanks for the help and advice, much appreciated.
