Fuel regulator needed?

I have an older edelbrock 1406 carb that i am thinking about swapping out for a new avs2 1906. Its a mild 350 with a mechanical fuel pump.(carter) used mostly for cruising and the occasional red light stomp. I have read the avs2 like to run lower than 6 psi. Wondering if I should run a fuel regulator or are they more for electric pumps and Efi?

Maybe start with a gauge to see what it actually is first. But, dont cheap out on a gauge,. The cheap ones are out of whack and change readings randomly. Same with a regular. Get a good one if you need it.

I would also recommend what @biker mentioned for you to check your fuel pressure out first before adding a pressure regulator . Also as mentioned do not cheap out on those small in line fuel pressure gauges as some are very inaccurate and even fail to read any fuel pressure

The cheap gauges will often fail quickly do to heat and vibration . In fact I would just install it temporarily for quick pressure readings in the garage , driveway or along a curb on the street . Just purchase a nice quality dual feed line with a 1/8th inch tap for pressure gauge . Also get a 1/8th inch pipe plug to use when the gauge is removed

As for a nice quality and accurate fuel pressure regulator I would go with a Holley #12-803 fuel pressure regulator ( 4.5 psi - 9 psi)

I've used this style regulator on many vehicles I've owned going on over 44 years with no issues !!!


Here's the Holley pressure regulator on my Camaro and you can also see a #4AN hose tapped into the fuel log . The AED Guage is tapped into the fuel pump side of the regulator so I can monitor fuel pump pressure . The AN line at the fuel log reads fuel pressure after the regulator

I have a 1406 on my Camaro as well. Eddy carbs are known for being really fussy and malfunction above 5.5psi. I put an Eddy mechanical fuel pump, and never looked back. It's rated for Eddy carbs, and no need to plumb in a gage. (Many others like a gage, and can't/won't say anything bad about them.)

One word for a regulator Aeromotive, best regulator out there. Put a dead head 2 port one on your car set it to 4.5lbs and that Eddy carb will run perfect and not have a stinky idle.

Thanks everyone for the replies. seems like I have a few options. I was leaning towards going with a regulator but the low psi fuel pump is also a good idea.How does summit regulators and gauges compare to say holley?

IMHO, I think regulators are important regardless of the mechanical pump being of the low psi variety or not. A steady pressure in my opinion is better for the needle and seat, plus who is watching their fuel psi while revving it to the moon while working to keep the car under control. I've always tried to run a regulator with a carb.
