So, the 4th gen aluminum one is weak, huh?
And about a foot too short.
Yeah, even with a Magnum, I think my driveshaft is 46” and some change. The 4th Gen Shafts are like 42”
you're honestly not going to be saving a whole hell of a lot anyways over getting something custom if you end up having to buy and trim down a preexisting donor.
I managed to find a 45.5 Aluminum drive shaft when I did my 700r4 conversion... it was off a ford lightning pickup, but its larger diameter doesnt leave alot of wiggle room
I have found that the aluminum's diameter required to suite the critical speed often leads to a real tight fitment or running out of real estate quickly for our cars, especially if the exhaust is tucked and in the 3" sizes. Also, getting 1350 u-joints pose another issue.
My 1988 Firebird Formula 350 came with an aluminum Driveshaft (Behind a 700R4)
For a 700R4 conversion it seems 45.5" driveshaft length is about what you are a looking for. From my understanding the aluminum 92-97 Ford Aerostar AWD rear driveshaft fits the bill. I know the mustang guys look out for these and they should work for our 700R4 conversion as well. Get the correct yoke and conversion u-joints and it should fit, and maybe have the balance checked. Right? Anyone go down this road? I did a used parts search and found one at scrap yard about 80 miles away for $50. Seems worth a try at that price. Using my existing yoke I'd be into an aluminum driveshaft for less than $100.

I'd pay attention to what G72z said above. Depending on your rear end gearing, that driveshaft is going to be rolling along at pretty high rpm if you get into the 80mph and up range in overdrive. Make sure whatever shaft you choose can safely handle that rpm. I like the idea of aluminum too, but in practice I dont think it's the best choice for our cars.
A few things guys have said here have already made me question if its worth it. One said he'd seen aluminum ones twist up like a pretzel! You're taught since you're a kid, to get rid of rotating mass as much as you can but, sometimes the cost is too high for the gain like, with aluminum brake drums and other times, its just a safety and dependability issue like, this. Peace of mind is a pretty damn valuable thing. Keeping my old iron one is becoming more and more the ticket, to me. Could have it shortened later for a 700r4.
