My oldest son turns 21 next month. He joined the Navy just a few days after his 18th birthday. When he went it he never cussed and swore he would never drink. We'll see how the drinking thing goes because he now cusses enough to make me look like a saint.

For me it was 10yrs in the Reserves so basically a night or two during the week during most of the year and then up to four months on a fulltime contract during the summer when at University. I did learn some French swear words from a French-Canadian bosun who, although being a really nice and friendly guy, was constantly swearing in French under his breath. Quite funny actually. I did do a shyte-load of drinking though as booze was dirt cheap onboard ship once we sailed out of Canadian waters at the start of the summer season. Beer was $0.50 a can and hard liquor ran from $0.15 to $0.25 a shot! For $10, you could easily get completely wasted and that happened on a very regular basis! What we would do is when we would go into port overnight or longer, we'd secure the ship, have dinner then open the bar. Those that weren't on duty would then get nice and drunk, head off the ship to a local nightclub for dancing and what not while only having one or two drinks to maintain their level of drunkenness! I had one hangover that lasted 3 days!!

That sort of thing has probably changed now though as a few years ago, the Navy shutdown all the bars onboard the ships after an incident in San Diego during a RIMPAC exercise. I'm sure more than a few people were NOT happy about that.

I actually still have that shirt, I had a friend that was a Pistachio Farmer ( used to send me bags of them)

I read that 80% of the Worldwide production of Pistachios & Almonds comes from CA. And it takes nearly 2,000 Gallons of water to produce a pound of Nuts. Vs 10 Gallons for a pound of Oranges. And the State burns every year!
