I purchased inserts on ebay for my original 15" steel Z28 wheels, only what I received was the wrong thing. The only thing I can think of is they must be for the optional aluminum wheels since they are nearly the size of the whole center cap. The seller works as a Mgr of a Chevy Parts Dept. and he's saying that these 2" inserts are for the standard '78-'79 Z28 wheels and I don't know what I'm talking about, and must have the wrong wheels. He's even saying the emblem design is for '78-'79 wheels, when as far as I know it's the '77 and '78 that shared the same "Z28" emblem design and '79 went on to a different one. Anyway, how could I have the wrong "steel" wheels? I know they made different revisions but the center caps are the same aren't they? Mine need about a 1.5" insert?

The part number on the center cap inserts I was shipped is #00474316. Can anyone tell me if this is the part number for the insert for the optional wheels? And more importantly...what's the correct part number for the center cap "insert" for a 15" steel Z28 wheel with the '78 Z28 emblem?

    Thanks!

You're right, those caps are for the optional aluminum wheels available in 78-79. In all fairness, the parts manual shows the same part number , 474316 for both the 78-79 aluminum wheel, but that is incorrect, they did use a different "Z28"design in '79.

Concerning the steel wheel cap: you're right again, the 77-78 shared one design, part number 469688, and the 79-81 shared the new "Z28" design, part number 14009872. These are complete caps, including the ïnsert, which was not available separately.

Please be aware that my GM parts manual was published Aug, 1985, and the parts number MAY have been superceded. I know the 79-81 center cap with insert for steel wheels is still available from GM, but I'm not sure of the 77-78 steel wheelcap / insert

As far as the Z28 design goes for the 79, even some of the suppliers out there are sending mixed signals. Some say the design is the same for 77-79 and others say 77 & 78 had one design and 79-81 had the other design. Once and for all, which is it?

Thanks 79ZED! These are actual "inserts" that I received (with that part number) that would fit in an existing center cap, to replace the worn out emblem.

MidniteZ - There are some '78 and '79 similarities but the Z28 emblem design isn't one of them. While the '77 and '78 still used a design with a larger "Z" then the "2" and the "8" were, in '79 the "Z" and the "28" where all the same size.

    MidniteZ,

As far as Z28's go for the 77-81 model years, ther ewas only two Z28 caps on steel wheels. The 1977-78 and the 1979-81. Inserts were not available, you had to buy the whole cap w/insert.

The aluminum wheels are more complicated. I don't believe you could buy the cap complete with the insert from GM, but I could be wrong. My parts manual lists the caps and inserts seperately for 78,79, and 80 to 81 wheels. I don't see any listing of caps with insert in my book.

What John says would make sense. Don't forget these aluminium rims were options on any Camaro from 79 up. They were Z28 only in 78. The emblem for the same center cap on a non-Z car was a black circle with the bow tie emblem outlined in silver
