GM production facilities were an assembly line type of Machining operation so each station had to use a common reference point in order to accurately machine the block. This is completely different than a machine shop which performs one boring operation at a time and can use reference points like the crankshaft centerline to set up the machine. The amount of time needed to set up a machine to bore or hone a block in a machine shop would never fly on a production line. The equipment is oftentimes made by the same company but the design Is entirely different.
