am thinking of having my '79 back-halved, and although this constitutes 'cutting-up' the car, I'd rather not s-t-r-e-t-c-h the wheel-well opening,
leaving it as it came, which will probably limit the size (height) of slick that can be used

any first-hand knowledge is greatly appreciated, and pictures are even better!!!

Stock wheel well on my 70 1/2 fits a Hoosier 29.5 x 10.5W, it's real tight, but it's a track only car, no biggie.

is the problem the leading & trailing edges of the wheel-well, or is your problem clearance inside?

I'm leaning towards a narrowed frame-rails & rear-end, wheel tubs, ladder-bars, etc., so I don't think a problem 'inboard' would be the limiting factor...

... or am I wrong (like usual)?

You will be able to fit a 315 radial if you tub it.

I was limited by the front, that is closer then the rear of the opening.
Now if you do start cutting, you will fit a 30" & maybe more without touching the quarter.
I ran a 30 x 9 for many years, so if you go inward, your only limiting issue is the shape of the quarter.
I would have to look, I don't know how wide they go on a 30" tall slick??
If it was me and I didn't want to touch the quarter, I would just do a mini tub.
A monster tire will have to sit way inside to fit, and I hate that look.

    Good luck.

This is one of my cars. I'll try and explain what I mean.
Look above the quarter, they had to add a notch, to make room for the 34.5 tall tire.
It still sits in from the quarter more then I would like, but picture it without the notch.
The damn tires would have to touch & they would be a foot from the quarter??
So unless you have something like a truck, or a straight quarter, a huge tire will look silly without stretching the opening??

Oh and this has been stretched like a foot, and the tire still has to sit that far in.

Me, too, and it is hardly worth doing, just to fit a 30" x 12" slick , assuming that is the widest available at that height
(I've already had 29" x 11" in the existing opening):
I was hoping to go 32" x 14" minimum, but that appears to be a fantasy without massaging the 1/4-panels

I was already planning to replace the 35 year-old original paint, so I guess we'll be stretching the wheel-wells,
but I'd still appreciate seeing pictures, if anybody has some

I know the slab-sides make it easier, but I was hoping for something like this

A Monte makes it easier, then the slope we have to deal with.
Have you looked at the 31 x 10.5 W, I have several friends that run in the 7's with that tire.
You will have a nice combo and it will take less cutting & messaging??
Maybe post or ask around if anyone has that tire on a 12" wheel and take some real world dimensions??
