Identify this tool for me please!!!

    i was digging around in my grandads stuff, he was a welder by trade. came across this tool and am not sure what it is. i think its some kind of depth gauge but not sure. Tell me what you think.

    i did find an outside micrometer, not sure if i'll ever use it either but would come closer to useing it then the other.

    I've got two of those off of my dad. He was trying to sell them in a garage sale... He doesn't understand that fathers cannot sell tools... He'll get used to it eventually after I crash all the garage sales on the day before. I could see them being handy for seeing how much your cylinder is below deck maybe, possibly... Although, I've never seen any write ups on engine builds using them.
