Federal standards in '68 (I think) says every vehicle sold in the States will have the side markers and seat belts were added in '67. So all Camaros were originally sold with seatbelts.

It is a federal standard for new cars (hence the addition of side markers in '68 as you note) but I don't think the DOT comes back and patrols for cars already on the street. My point being that individual states may be able to set other requirements - then again, maybe not. It still comes down to enforcement (as Throttle points out) and my guess is that a person would not be pulled over for just the absence of side marker lights. It would be another reason that gets one pulled over and that the missing marker lights would be just another citation to add to the pile.

I checked on this recently and the DMV told me it was illegal however what officer will even be looking for marker lights. They also told me since I have my car titled as a antique they could not ticket me for it :)

If you're in an inspection state, I'd be careful and look up what you can do, or can't.
I shaved my side markers, and I've seen many shaved, but CA doesn't have a vehicle inspection where lights and safety equipment are inspected.

So, is it legal to do so? I'd guess it isn't. But, I also can't imagine a CHP pulling me over for the lack of a side marker light. There'd be a better chance of that if there was a burnt out light.. lol.

    illegal probably.
anyone going to ticket or enforce it, probably not.

example. my car litterally has no windows (front, back, sides) i asked a uniformed officer if it was illegal to drive without a windshield. she said "i dont even know if there is a code for "no windshield" but there is one for "everything your car came with from the factory. I doubt anyone will give you a hard time."

mine have been shaved on the el camino for 15 years, not one question about them.
