    TEXAS, there is no state law in Texas regarding car side marker lights at all. However as a Texas state motor vehicle inspection station owner, I can tell you that state inspection law requires em, and as a 73 camaro owner, I have to ask? Why wouldn't you register your car as a antique? Then you don't have to have a state inspection!!! A 5 year registration only costs 60 dollars also! So why worry about it? Where in texas are you from?

    Had a 91 Firebird inspected two months ago in Harris county. didn't notice my sidemarker lights not working at all on driver side. One guy walked up and saw that and said hey his lights are out on this side. Other guy said they are not on the inspection list - passed.

    That said, two days ago I was researching spotlight legalities on a 4x4. Here are some links on vehicle equipment

    http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/
    http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/TN/htm/TN.547.htm#547.326

    Code = Transportation Code
    Chapter = 547 Vehicle Equipment
    Sec. 547.326 Minimum Lighting Equipment Required

    But as you see here there are other sections on lighting so look around
    Sec. 547.327. SPOTLAMPS PERMITTED.
    Sec. 547.305. RESTRICTIONS ON USE OF LIGHTS.
    Sec. 547.330. AUXILIARY DRIVING LAMPS PERMITTED.

    Like Flowjoe said, it is a federal/DOT requirement, state laws don't override it. Most local LEOs probably won't check for side markers. Personally, I would keep them for no other reason than to hopefully prevent someone from hitting my car.

    My Beretta does have factory tinted tail lights...but my red front signals & side markers are illegal, but I've never had a problem yet. (Knock on wood.)
