cool, thanks for the clarification;

1970 Z28 bowtie emblem,
1970 RS/Z28 RS emblem;

1970 SS gets SS emblem which the SS would trump the RS if the car is an RS-SS

1970 Plain jane sport shares the bowtie, with the z28/std unless equipped with RS looks package,

The woodgrain was added to the shroud in the 1970 if it had the Z23 Interior Accent Group OR the Z87 Custom Interior.

Does that 70 z28/rs have the 1 yr only 12 bolt rear by chance or was that just for the SS only? the 70z28 came with the LT1 350 V8 360hp w/ M22 four-speed manual but "what rear end"?

A 70Z came standard with a 12-bolt rear end (one-year only). Standard suspension was F41 with a rear sway bar.

As far as a 70SS, I think with the 350, the F41 was optional. According to the 1970 page on this site, the F41 was forced on the 396. Perhaps that added a rear sway bar. I would think so. According to the same page for 1970, the optional F41 was slightly different than the Z28 standard F41.

As far as the rear end for a 70SS, I think the 350 got the 10-bolt. I don't know if the 396 had a 12-bolt option. According to this site, the 396 L78 required positraction, but it doesn't say if it was a 12-bolt. There is the G80 positraction rear axle and a ZQ9 performance rear axle, but the page doesn't say if they are 10-bolt or 12-bolt. I don't see an option for a 12-bolt.

The SS option was always a bit strange to me. If an auto, you got a TH350 and not a TH400 which was the standard auto tranny for a Z28. I would think a TH400 would be standard on a performance car like the SS.

Something new that I learned on the 1970 page for a Z28: positraction was optional. I figured it would have been standard.

I got a story this morning from Barn Finds in my Google feed about a 70SS 350.

There's an ebay link in the story, which is 22 hours old. It mentions the auction has 4 days remaining and bidding at $10,800.00, but oddly enough, ebay says the listing was ended by the seller. Anyway, the seller stated that the car has a 12-bolt rear end. So it would appear that the 70SS 350 could have a 12-bolt. However, I think some SS owners need to chime in at this point to verify. Oh, and it also has a column shift!

I guess the bigger question here is what would you do with it if you bought it? Leave it as is or restore it or resto-mod it? Everything I look at needs some kind of work, engine bay, motor, muffler etc. It's a great example of a mostly original RS but really could you leave it along after buying it?
