Is there a better way than jacking up your car to work under it?

I wouldn't lift on the pinch welds. I dont think our cars were ever designed for that. Newer cars are.
I did my springs without using the pinch welds.

I think you went about it the right way by using a proper block to lift at the pinch weld. And if yours are in good shape, I'm sure it would be fine.
Proper block is the trick. Slots on the small rubber blocks are about 5/8" deep, my pinch welds run about 7/8" deep. That's why I slotted a 4x6 block of wood, but only use when I absolutely need to lift from that point. Our 2nd gens just are not designed to lift from pinch welds, that's been said before.
