LOL, that's awesome, love it....
Something tells me this is not actually a "junk" 400 motor. Pretty impressive performance. Little more cam and you're at 12.5 secs.
No it "is" a junk engine IMO, best part was the 10 year old spark plugs I ran last night, lol. The 400 was re-ringed (factory dished pistons) and new bearings with the smog stock 487X heads, no performance valve job, put in it in 1991 in a '79 Malibu and beat the snot of it for 2 years. I then put it in a '71 Nova that had 2.56 gears and 11" TCI converter and ran 8.30's in 1993. Pulled the 400 put it in my Son's '63 Biscayne until 2014 and beat a lot of cars with that big tank. You are right, it needs more cam the engine was done at 5300rpm. The was a 12.6 in it last night but the track sucked. I will take pictures of the engine when I pull the heads for the Vortec swap.
Wow! Any bets on what it pics up after the vortec swap?
I am hoping for 4 tenths and 4 mph, we will see if the cam will carry to 6K with the LT4 springs the Vortec heads have on them now. The 906's ran 11.49 best on my other flat top 406 last year but have some very tiny cracks by an exhaust seat so looks like the Ceramic sealer will be used as I am out of Vortec's until I pull the 062's off last years engine for the Bowtie Vortec's.
Well after 2 tests and very good luck with this old engine, I put in a new oil pump and now has 62psi. It will be sad to see the old 400 go to a new home, it's been like one of the family after 30 years of cruisn' and racing the old 400. I will miss it but it's SOLD.
Delivered the 400 last night. One engine down and 3 more to sell.
