Key/Ignition Issue

Hello all!

Recently bought a 79 z28, and it’s a bit rough but I knew it would be a project. After a few weeks and several repairs later I finally got it started to only find I couldn’t kill the ignition once running. Seems the key doesn’t turn all the way back as it should. Does this sound like a bad lock cylinder? Or potentially something else.

Thanks for any advice on this.

Welcome to NastyZ28! :D

Grab the collar of the steering column right in front of the dash and turn it counterclockwise.

If that allows you to turn and release the key… it’s an issue with the back drive linkage adjustment.

Thanks for that suggestion, but it did not allow me to release the key.

When you did what Twisted said did you disconnect the back drive linkage, if not give that a try as that will eliminate the linkage completely.

Try pulling back the rod going to the neutral safety switch. If that doesn’t work then take the neutral safety sw. off the column, it’s above the break pedal.
