License plate area decal?

I’m not sure what that is. It seems to me covering your licence plate would be unlawful in virtually any jurisdiction.

I have seen some kind of black out covering that lets you read the plate number on a car only if you’re on the dead on correct spot, presumably for nefarious reasons.

In looking at that, it appears to be an accent which would be on the bumper cover itself, rather than over the license plate. Something to better accent the license plate rather than cover it.

I don't recall seeing that on the new Camaros as they were driven off of the transport back then. What I recall is a bumper cover which was all body color. Might this be something which one plant did and the other one didn't, or was for Export cars only?

Yes, that door handle tape was real on production cars, color coded to the body paint. GM replacement handles did not have it, so body shops had to do something to get the replaced ones to match the other handle.

Later, some aftermarket accessory companies came out with "soft touch" vehicle names to go on the outside handles, as if nobody knew what that model of car looked like. THAT was cheesy to me. Usually black letters on a silver-white background, attached with double-sided tape.

I just looked at the link and saw what this thread is about. I recently stripped the back bumper of my 1979 Camaro bare and repainted. The license plate area had that black stuff in it. I though it was added by the original owner and had then been painted over. My car is very original and the tag went over the top of this black "sticker". It was a bit thick more than 1/16" and somewhat brittle. It was very, very stuck to the urethane and the original car color was under it. Do any of the guru's here know if this was factory applied, dealer applied or an aftermarket thing? Thanks.

My 1978 Z28 that I bought new off the dealer's lot has it. It is a black vinyl like sheet that is over the painted rear bumper right where the license plate indentation is. When the plate is installed all you can see is about a 1/4 to 3/8 inch black strip on either side of the license plate.
