Looking for a laptop $500 or less

It has been a long time since I have been in the market for a computer of any sort.
What can I do for under $500? More importantly.....wtf am I looking for?
Things have changed since I cared enough to look at all the specs and stuff

Look for one that has a SSD. That will greatly improve performance.

I like to check walmart 1st. Compare to Best buy and all the others. You can find something under 500.00 easy. I would want no less than a 320Gig. i5 core or better if you want to spend a little more. The note books are around 8GB. I have a 500GB Toshiba Lap Top that is 2011 i3 core with an upgraded Hard drive. I got ton of files and still have room. Plus a back up drive of 2TB. Good to have the back up drive in case of Hard drive failure. Which is why I had to upgrade. The HD told me it was failing at least so I could get the Back up B4 it died. Good luck.

I opted for the newest iPad. My Laptop is from 2009 and is still good enough for what I use it for. I use my iPad daily for hrs and get more use from it rather than a laptop.

If you are looking to mainly surf the webs and youtube as so forth, and not planning on excel or word , then look at the Chromebooks , they do all that you want , if that's what you are looking to use it for.

I would get a wireless mouse too. I don't work well with the touch pad. IDK Not coordinated or what. My kids have no problem, but they do like their wireless mouse also. Plus they use it on the smart TV's to do stuff.

I got an Acer spin 15" Chromebook on ebay for $200. Listed as a refurb but it looked new, smelled new, and working fine. SS drive boots up in about 2 seconds. Battery life is great. Lighted keyboard, Intel, touch screen, etc. and the spin deal is nice to use as a reader at breakfast too.
