Hey there - new owner of a 70 Z28. My father in law highly recommended Lucas Oil 10w-40 hot Rod oil for our first oil change. We did so - added 5 qts. Will probably need a top off - is it ok to add any old 10w-40 or should it be more of the same. Not looking for a debate on if this was a good choice or not! LOL! Just trying to work through this one. Thanks

Bought a three pack of the 5 quart jugs of Lucas at Amazon for reasonable money. Don't drive it much so that'll last me a long time. I'd add the same oil as what's in there.

Dang. We did the same but only 1 x 5qt. Love Amazon. We are hoping to put it on the road Thursday and won’t get oil until Saturday! Grr. A splash of regular 10w40 is really going to make a difference?

Ripley,

NAPA auto parts carries that oil. If they don’t have it in stock you can have it the next day for pickup at the store because they keep it in their warehouse. Not sure what state you are in but you should have a NAPA nearby. Just go to or call the closest store tomorrow and ask them to get you the oil for Wednesday.

Another option is to get a quart of Valvoline VR1 10w-30 racing oil (they don’t make 10w-40 in the zinc formula). VR1 has similar levels of zinc, and using that to top off will cause no problems at all. You can get it at several big box auto part stores.

Does your 70 Z have the stock engine, stock oil pan? 5 quarts was a full fill with the big filter back then.

I would run it 1-2 Qrts low before adding another brand of oil and f@#*ing up the oils formulation, your not going to kill the engine unless your foot is to the floor going around the high banks of Daytona.

I've run my engine with 0-10 psi on some extended high G full throttle out corners @ 4-6k rpm, no circle o ring ghosting on the bearings..... JMO
