In my area So. Ohio those temperature swings would have underground water mains popping all over town. I feel for the city maintenance having to dig it up and patch the pipe.

I can only believe that they don't bury the water lines deep enough in your area.

Rule of thumb is that water lines should be at least 1 foot below the frost line. If they are, your area shouldn't be having issues.

We do have pipe breaks, some of the pipes are still oak lathed pipes laid in 1837, but these ones do not usually break, they will bend with frost heave. Cast iron pipes are the ones that break most often.

-36c again this morning, 5th day in a row here for temps in the -30's. It's funny how you adapt though, if I think of this weather in the middle of summer, I want to puke. However, when you see how beautiful and clear it is, I can't wait to be outside.
Put over 100 miles on my snowmobile yesterday.
The snowmobile pic is my son, I tried to put up 2 others, but it says the files are too big? Never had that happen on this site.
Our current temperature right now is -34c w/ a 24km/h wind, wind chill is -45c and CRAZY old me is going on my daily (exercise) 10 kilometer walk :) LOL.

We have had a quiet year for water main failures in my area, despite the temp extremes. We just had 2 days of mild weather, then -28 again this morn. Beautiful sunny day, gonna put some miles on the sled.

Any water issues we had this year was from city crews forgetting to drain the odd fire hydrant.

Good work! 10k is a good hike in any weather, I discovered by accident that keeping my covid mask on while working outside takes the sting out of the air and helps keep the face warm.

Lots of snow here this year so less chance of of pipe breakage.
Balmy 9 degrees with brisk 25-40 mph wind out of the north west.

Can you please close the doors up there !!! you're letting all that cold air down here into Tennessee. It's been 3 days of freezing rain and snow . And this morning clear blue skies and low 20° temps
