So since I picked up my 4.10 Posi rear Ive been trying to decide what to do with my old one. I've decided to keep it but i haven't been able to find out how to Moth ball it for long term storage.

I plan to wrap it in Plastic ( Industrial shrink wrap like the kind used for wrapping pallets) and cover it in a tarp. My biggest concerns are the fluid and making sure it doesn't seize up or anything of the link.

Should I drain it or keep the fluid?

is there an additive i should use to make sure it stays usable?

    any recommendations are appreciated.

Anything above the oil level, gears, axles and inside of the housing, will rust after time. Don't drain it. It would be a good idea to turn the pinion several times at least once a year to coat the gears with oil. If you keep it inside and keep the temperature consistant all year then it should be all right.

Had to edit this. I had below instead of above.

If you can find some "Fogging" oil, you can remove the fill plug on the side and spray in inside to coat the gears and carrier. Like posted above, turn it a few times a year to help prevent seizing up and dont drain the lube.

What was the 4.10 posi rear from? Aftermarket? I'm looking for that same gear.

+1 I lost a set of 3.90 gears because I neglected it and the gears pitted where they were not in the gear oil

The 4.10 posi was from a 72 camaro, and aftermarket. ( 10 bolt but its not likely to blow from the minuscule HP im making ). Craigslist find for $300

I was hoping the shrink wrap and a little bit of silicone around the diff cover would keep rain out. I wanted to store it in the shed in the back in hopes it would stay dry enough.

So keep it full, turn it a few times a year and fogging oil should keep it happy?

Also turning it often will help keep seals from leaking.
