All these years I big thing about that movie that always bothered me. When you only have 1 shot at the mother ship why would you only take 1 nuke? I mean really you take 2 just in case 1 is a dud right? Having grown up in a military family my dad would say if one will do the job send 2.

Lol, In reality a nuclear weapon is as reliable as it can get.

In such a far fetched situation as 2 pooty actors flying a UFO that has been hidden for 50 yrs and your main concern is if a bomb is going to go off or not?

Time being of the essence. I would have to say, it has more to do with the blending of 2 technologies to mount the rocket pod to the alien craft than only having 1 nuke.

If we had two available in 1945, surely we could come up with 2 more now if needed.

    well..you are talking about GOVERNMENT

..1st you would have to submitt a work request to mount the launch pod to the XXXX (top secret ship)
    Then open the bid process.
Then vet the CHEAPEST 5 bidders.
    Then vote on it
Then have a meeting about to proceed.
Then the contractor would have to get union approval for the 345 guys to drill the 4 hole and place 4 bolts in them...with 2 washers each, lock washer, and interference nuts.
Then the break times must be negotiated by the union stewards...
    Then another meeting.
Then must inform the GOV that the cost overruns are going to multiply the negotiated price by 6000%
    Have another meeting.
    ....
I think we would be dead!

    Now in the PRIVATE sector...
make a call...2 guys (and 1 gal) show up WELD THE CHIT on...while they are warming up the engine to leave!

Launch a salvo from all countries at the mother ship and watch it burn. No need for hundreds of pilots to die.

The thing that bugs me about the power to the old UFO and the new arrivals is it is supposedly transmitted from the Mothership and/or the ships hovering overhead. If Powered by the Mothership taking IT out would have made everything else fall out of the sky? If power is from the other ships overhead taking out the Mothership wouldn't do squat!
