The rear may be correct and original, but someone could have just converted the brakes from drum to disc? Thats a common upgrade.
My Z came new with a 10 bolt posi.

Hello,
I am new to this site and have a 1981 Z28 and live in Michigan. My car is complete but I would like to make it as original as possible. It was built in Van Nuys in June. It is a 305 LG4/Z28 engine suffix is DHZ with manual trans. The motor, carb, and trans are all original and have correct numbers on them. The rear end is different and would like to find an original rear end which I think is a PY code. Any help to find parts and where to look would be very helpful.
Thank you
Very nice looking car. I have an '81 with a warmed over 350/auto. Some day when I have thousands of dollars lying around I'd like to pour it into making this car better. Until then, if then ever comes, I'll enjoy driving it. It runs like a sewing machine.

How do I tell if it is the original rear end? I can not find any markings or stamps on the rear end. The drive shaft looks to be original as the plastic is still in the u-joints. The stuff you have to heat and it comes out like a worm. You know what I am talking about?

There are numbers on the rear in 2 places that I'm aware of (maybe more?) - but I don't remember which are the ones that tell you the code. One spot is on the passenger side tube that the axle goes through, the other is on the web of the pumpkin. They are very hard to read and you may not see them until you clean all of the dirt off with degreaser or brake cleaner. I'm not aware of plastic stuff in u-joints.

Very nice-looking Z-28. I did own a 1981 Z-28 back in 1981 I bought it new. That year you could not get a 350 CID Z-28 engine with manual transmission. You either chose 350 CID with TH350 with lockup torque converter or what you have which is 305 CID with 4 speed manual. I hope you find the correct rear for the Camaro. Again, really good-looking Camaro.
