Hello,
I am new to this site and have a 1981 Z28 and live in Michigan. My car is complete but I would like to make it as original as possible. It was built in Van Nuys in June. It is a 305 LG4/Z28 engine suffix is DHZ with manual trans. The motor, carb, and trans are all original and have correct numbers on them. The rear end is different and would like to find an original rear end which I think is a PY code. Any help to find parts and where to look would be very helpful.
Thank you
Hello,

I live in Holt (just south of Lansing) and have a few '81 Z parts. I do have an extra 3.42 rear end. Can't remember if the stamp code is one this one, or on the one that's in my car but I know I've seen the PE code on one of them. The rear end is a little buried so I really can't look at it unless heavy moving is done.

Classic Industries and NPD are two good sources.

Nice 81 but I sure would not waste any effort on a "correct" diff. Not on an 81. It is just pointless really.
It's his car, and it's not like a correct rear end is expensive or hard to find.
It may actually be the correct rear end in the car, just with a disc conversion which may or may not be reversible.

I would be willing to give you a little help if I could at least come and look at it. Is that possible? Before the snow starts to fall.

Maybe you have the orig axle but not the guts. I would check your numbers.

My 1980 I ordered new. I took this pic in 1981. I also have the build sheet for my 78 and 80 Z28 but not my 77 Z28.

Your 80 looks so much like my 81. And congrats. From what I remember, you managed to hang onto most of that marvelous pelt of hair.

PE is non posi and PY is with posi. Locking is posi. Hopefully the guy ordered Posi if you have paperwork with your car. Otherwise get posi. I always ordered posi on my 77, 78 and 80 Z28’s with 4 speed of course.

It looks to me a PQ stamped in the axel. Picture attached. Best I could get as I don’t have a car lift. Any help would be great.
