PE is non posi and PY is with posi. Locking is posi. Hopefully the guy ordered Posi if you have paperwork with your car. Otherwise get posi. I always ordered posi on my 77, 78 and 80 Z28’s with 4 speed of course.

Could you get the PQ 3.08 rear end in this car. It would help a lot if I could have found the build sheet!!
Any help with this would be great!
Thank you,

An ‘80 4 speed z28 car should be a 3.08. So you wouldn’t have a PY axle. PQ is correct for an 80. The opposite for an 81. The rearend being swapped out is common. All my 78-81 Z28s were non locking rears and I swapped them out with any posi diff I could find.

The problem you may have, your car very well might not be an original 4-speed car. People converted these cars…you need a build sheet to correctly restore this car to be as made.

So the PQ is correct with a 3.08 gear? I have an 81 with 305, 4 speed. Engine, Carb, and trans are correct with the correct numbers. I am questioning the rear end as it has disc brakes, and these cars did not come with disc brakes, drum only.

An 81z28 4 speed should have 3.42 gears. The Trans Am WS6 had rear disc brakes, and they bolted directly on ANY 10 bolt. Someone could have easily added the disc brakes, but if the car is a factory 4 speed, the whole rearend could be from a TA. If your car was an auto and someone converted it to a 4 speed, then 3.08 would be correct. The problem is you are dealing with a 42 year old car….you don’t know what people have done over the last 4 decades. Look for a build sheet.

I have looked for the build sheet. It is not in the interior back seat or back seats. If it is on top of the gas tank it is probable unreadable.
I am just looking to get this car back to original as possible.

A 1981 Z28 4-speed came with 3.08 while the automatic came with 3.42.

Same goes for the 1980 Z28.

For 1978 the 4 speed Z28 came with 3.73 and the automatic with 3.42.
