I went to school in Williamsport a hundred years ago, nice place, but i felt there wasnt much there really holding it together except a few big factories, and the LL world series......this will hurt that town for sure.

I’m still using my wet/dry metal shop vac I bought in 1983. Not keen on today’s plastic products.

Yep it’s a shame. This place is right in my back yard. Sad to hear.

We have lost most of the sustaining businesses here over the last decade.

Horsepower for vacuums is likely calculated much like horsepower for air compressors. The "new" way of rating air compressors is to guess how much horsepower the motor would deliver if you fully loaded it to stall. At that point, the motor goes up in smoke and delivers no air, but gets a nice high theoretical horsepower rating.

In the real world (forgetting about theory), a true 5hp motor delivers around 15-18 cfm of compressed air flow. In the advertising world, they want you to believe that their 4-5 cfm compressor has a 5hp motor when we really know that it is around 1.5 hp.

Probably going to China to pay workers $2.50/hr to build junk that’ll last 1 yr. Azz wipes.

That sucks. We have several in our shop/garage/home. They take a lot of abuse.

Had several of the Shop Vacs at work, and a couple here. Switches go bad on all of them. I cut a hole and put a direct operated switch on mine and it will probably run for years. I'd say the Shop Vac name will be around a long time, like Craftsman and so many others.

my guess is this was put in motion years ago trying to stay competitive in the big box era. margins probably disappeared leaving them no margin for error.

IMO, you can thank Wal-Mart, Lowes and Home Depot. They are ruthless in negotiating prices and to get into them you basically have to sell at a loss. They could give a rats @ss about where the thing is made or even if you will be in existence tomorrow.

that is exactly True, I used to sell to all 3 of them & Menards. On most products, quality gets cut as the manufacturer has to keep selling it for less money
