Can someone post pics of ‘70 factory original 16” wiper blades. I’m trying to find out if the rubber blades were smooth or ribbed. Close-ups would be great. Thanks :)

Yes, I studied the pics, but from the camera angles I couldn't conclude anything, plus those are recessed 18" blades. I searched over at NCRC (Corvette site) that suggest, for the time frame, that the ribbed are correct. My problem is that I was sold a set of smooth blades by a person that was rather emphatic of those being correct.

I have a pair of NOS 1971 Camaro (w/Spec. Wipers) 18" black wiper blades (GM # 9872322, disc. 1/73) and one NOS 1971 Chevrolet Pass. car natural finish (gray) wiper blade (GM # 9846805, disc, 7/72). All 3 blades are identical except for the color, all are stamped "TRICO" and "MADE IN USA". NOTE: The Trico blades made in later years also have the letter "R" stamped near the "O" in the name "TRICO". The rubber inserts are "smooth" (without the 3 ribs) and have the words "U.S. PATENT NO. 2697241" molded into the rubber. I also have NOS 18" Trico rubber inserts used in later years that are "smooth" but have a different cross sectional shape.

I also have a pair of 16" natural finish (gray) 16" wiper blades from a 1970 Chevelle stamped "TRICO" and "MADE IN USA" that I have have stored in my garage attic for about the last 25 years. The rubber inserts have 3 ribs as well as the words and numbers "PATENT 2,834,976 CAN 58" molded into the rubber. I believe that these blades are GM # 3913614 as shown in my 1970 Chevrolet parts catalog (Jan. 1970). The 3913614 wiper blades were used on 68-72 Chevelles, 68-74 Novas and 68 Corvettes (1st design). I would think that these 16" Trico wipers would be the same for the 1970 Camaro without the Spec. wipers. However, the 70 Camaro 16" Trico wiper blade may be GM # 8798505, disc. 6/70, and replaced with GM # 3913614.

Were the original 70 Camaro 16" blades black in color similar to the 68-69 Corvette 2nd design 16" black wiper blades (GM 3938167, disc. 11/68) or did they have the natural finish (gray)?

Mulsanne Blue,
I know that it has been almost 10 years but while doing some research on vintage Camaro wiper blades I came across this thread. Did you ever get an answer about the rubber inserts for the 70 Z28 whether they were "ribbed" or "smooth"?

The GM part number of the 15 7/8" Trico rubber inserts as listed in Chevrolet parts catalogs from 1968 to January 1970 is 1387040. As per Chevrolet Parts History GM # 1387040 was replaced with GM # 3913614 in January 1970. Chevrolet parts catalogs after January 1970 list GM # 39136614 as the part number for the
15 7/8" Trico rubber inserts. Even though the rubber insert change was in January 1970 for service parts it is anyones guess when the actual change took place on the assembly. It could be a few months before or after January 1970.

The GM part # for the 15 7/8 Trico wiper blades, #3913614, first appeared on 1968 models (some assembly manuals & parts catalogs) and was replaced by GM # 9673995 in December 1974 as per Chevrolet Parts History (service parts). In my vintage wiper blade collection I have a NOS 3913614 wiper blade with a ribbed rubber insert that I bought at a swap meet in Thompson in October 1994, almost 26 years ago. It has been in storage ever since. It is a "ribbed" rubber insert just like the original Trico inserts on 1966-1967 Corvette. I suspect it was probable made before January 1970.
Since the 1970 Camaro assembly line started up about December 1969 I would say that maybe the "early" 1970 Camaro models with the standard wiper blades could have "ribbed" rubber inserts and maybe "late" 1970 models had "smooth" rubber inserts. We will probably never really know. I just thought that it was quite interesting that the change for the service part 15 7/8" Trico rubber inserts was January 1970.
BTW, In my collection I have a few vintage boxes of NOS RF-18 Trico rubber inserts and all have "smooth" rubber inserts. Many years ago I had 2 dozen vintage NOS RF-15 Trico rubber inserts, one dozen had the "bumps" or "dots" correct for 1963-1965 Corvettes with Trico blades and the other dozen had the "ribbed" rubber inserts correct for 1966-1967 Corvettes with Trico blades. I have never had any NOS RF-16 Trico rubber inserts.
Dave
