Paint shop jail! Should I bail?

I can predict how this will go.. When I show up to take the car home and round up the windshield they will call the owner who will tell me that they are "just about to start on it" tomorrow. When that happens should I just take it anyway? Threatening to take the car may get him motivated to finish it... Or is this too far gone?

Just take it anyway. You're beyond your schedule. They haven't done really ANYTHING to it.. Get your car back before its too late.

I have been nothing but nice and very persistent. I have not made a scene or gotten mad...No harsh words have been spoken...yet.

I would definitely go get it. I did that myself after my car was in paint jail for 4 and a half years. Granted, mine was fully painted finally, but not cut and buffed (another $450) and other minor assembly of stuff the body n paint guy wanted to do as part of the job. He just never could get it done. I was also VERY concerned about showing up and finding a chain and lock on the door. Go get it.

I guess I'm pretty patient, and lucky that I did get it back. Don't be like me. I think the world is weirder than it was 8 years ago when I got mine back.

IF you leave it, talk about a schedule on what will be done or under way each week you come back to check on it. The big if is because I'm not sure I'd leave it, but I understand the resistance to picking it up due to money loss, hassle and that little bit of hope he'll actually get it done.

I personally couldn't take the stress of being held hostage like this.

I would still get out of there.
When I was looking to get my Elkie painted, went to this award winning shop. Guy wouldn’t give me a ballpark estimate. The paint was bubbling, he said it could be rust. I said true, it did have minor rust in the typical areas, but I said it’s bad paint prep. Every place he pointed out I peeled the paint up to metal since I was going to paint it anyway and no rust. Didn’t get a good feeling and didn’t go with him. Was talking to a co worker who was thinking of getting his car done by him also. Same thing happened to him, no ballpark estimate. I told him to pass. He went with the guy. When he was 5K into it very little had been done and a bunch of excuses. I told him to cut his losses and get out. Over a period of about two years he sunk 20 grand into it and never got the car done. Ended up pulling the car and getting a divorce.
I’m glad I listened to my gut reaction. You have to view this as a business deal. If it’s bad relationship, it’s a bad relationship and you end the relationship.

is time to call it. look for another shop more reputable. it is not your fault go get it.
