A good tuned Q-jet will blow a Edelbroke carb away. There was a reason GM went away from the AFB carb. A 1406 is a junk tune out of the box, lean as all hell.

The best Quad GM installed was on the 1968 Chevelle.

Talked to Cliff finally. He does like to talk. lol. Really nice guy. He did tell me he doesn't work on anything from National Carburetors but is more than willing to help me with me working on it. From the model # I gave him he did say it was a better quality base to start from. Seems to be a 850 from a early 80's model truck. I am going to get his book and I guess finally learn about carburetors myself (other than mixture screws and idle setting). Since it does run good just rich (although he said it could be really lean) maybe I don't have too far to go. I'm sure I will have questions here as well.

I was a QJet fan in my younger days. One modification I always wanted to do but never got around to is bore the primary throttle bores for bigger throttle plates. This is a killer mod because the flow capacity of the primaries is increased significantly without enlarging the venturi size. The much more efficient primary side of the carb then is sufficient for most driving short of full throttle, high rpm. Better mileage, more power. It's almost like a free lunch. As I recall, Thermoquad throttle plates were used.

Hopefully I don't have far to go. Car actually runs really good it just stinks to high heaven no matter what I do. Should be a good learning experience though.
